After seven months of organizing, I’m proud to share that my coworkers and I have formed a union at Creative Growth, the Oakland studio and gallery for artists with developmental disabilities. To sustainably facilitate the self-determination and self-expression of artists in the studio, we need a living-wage and a collective voice.
Today we delivered a letter to management requesting voluntary recognition of the new union. We are asking supporters to sign this community letter of support, and to join our Solidarity Rally this Saturday, April 6, 12pm, outside SFMOMA (151 3rd St.)
Amazingly, 100 percent of eligible staff, all 34 of us, have now signed union cards.
We will bargain for wages and benefits in addition to political priorities, such as solidarity with the Palestinian resistance, through formal commitment to the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI).
Please read our press release, follow us on Instagram, and let me know if you would like a “We Support Creative Growth United” print. We screen-printed a number of them with Art Hazelwood/Poster Syndicate, and riso’d more at Oakland Printshop.
